We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest (Ella Baker)

Ella's Song Lyrics
Composed by Bernice Johnson Reagon

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

Until the killing of Black men, Black mothers' sons
Is as important as the killing of White men, White mothers' sons

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

And that which touches we most is that I had a chance to work with people
Passing on to others that which was passed on to me

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

To me young people come first, they have the courage where we fail
And if I can but shed some light as they carry us through the gale

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

The older I get the better I know that the secret of my going on
Is when the reins are in the hand of the young who dare to run against the storm

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

Not needing to clutch for power, not needing the light just to shine on me
I need to be one in the number as we stand against tyranny

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

Struggling myself don't mean a whole lot I come to realize
That teaching others to stand up and fight is the only way my struggle survive

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

I'm a woman who speaks in a voice and I must be heard
At times I can be quite difficult, I'll bow to no man's word

We who believe in freedom cannot rest
We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes

DON'T BOO, VOTE!

It is my darling dear husband's birthday and I am in a celebratory mood!

Today I am watching the Women's March from home.

I could not go to the march but the truth is, this is not a fight that ends or begins today. I am excited and inspired by the huge turnout, and I'm ready to do my part.

In the past few months, I have donated to or joined or renewed my membership to social justice organizations because I know individuals like me cannot do this alone:

American Civil Liberties Union
Human Rights Council
Planned Parenthood
NARAL Pro-Choice America
National Organization for Women
NAACP

I subscribed to publications that speak the truth because knowledge is power:

Ms. Magazine
NC Policy Watch
New York Times
Vanity Fair

I also signed up for the #LoveArmy and looked up my Federal, State, County, and City representatives and look forward to holding them accountable.

US Senate:
Richard Burr
Thom Tillis

US House:
GK Butterfield

NC Senate:
Floyd McKissick

NC Representative:
Henry Michaux

I plan on keeping up with their voting records. I will tell them how I feel and what I want them to do, and thank them when they do it and hold them accountable when they don't.

To them now I say:

We are watching you!! You can not hide from us and most importantly YOU WORK FOR US, so you better listen up and act accordingly.

This is MY country, Mr. Trump and the RNC

Republican lawmakers are so afraid of women and poor people that they are bending over backwards to defeat us. But we will not be defeated. Not now and not ever. This is our America and it is already great. We will fight to keep it headed in the right direction. Now and forever.
